A Photographic Trip to Skye

Mountains, Hostels, and Memories

There’s something magical about driving across Skye in early spring. This trip started with one of the most spectacular drives I’ve ever experienced—the snow-covered peaks of Glen Moriston and Glen Sheil stretching into the distance, sharp and pristine against the pale sky.

I’ve been photographing holiday properties for a number of years now, and each trip to Skye feels like a homecoming. I grew up on the west coast, and spent my teenage years in Glenelg before heading over to Aberdeen for university, so there’s a deep personal joy in returning, camera in hand, to the west.

This time, my work took me around Broadford and Kyleakin, photographing everything from backpackers’ hostels and cozy B&Bs to holiday apartments and charming farm lets. Each property has its own character, and capturing that on camera is always a rewarding challenge. On one of the afternoons, I managed a small detour to Plockton itself, revisiting familiar places and stunning seaside views—it’s always a treat to combine a bit of nostalgia with work. The big job this time was photographing all the rooms and living accomodation in Bayview Hostel, Broadford ready for it's opening weekend this weekend just gone.

Working in Skye is more than just photography; it’s a reminder of why I fell in love with the west coast in the first place—the combination of dramatic landscapes, welcoming communities, and that unique Highland light that makes every shot feel alive.

I feel incredibly lucky to continue doing this work for the holiday properties I’ve been collaborating with for years, and trips like this remind me that no matter how often I return, there’s always something new to discover, both in the scenery and in the stories of the places I photograph.

I was staying in the Hebridean Inn, which I had photographed the last time I was over on Skye for work. It's beautiful accomodation, based right on the shore in Harrapool, just as you drive into Broadford. I also had a wonderful meal out at Deli Gasta and grabbed a lovely hot chocolate at the Harbour Restaurant.
